And turning them out isn't the same as dimming them?

Do we "turn out" or "turn off" the light or is it .. Turn OUT the lights here ..?!

I thought about it and I think both 'turn out' and 'turn off' are valid phrases.'Turn off' is more of an electric-light-with-a-switch phrase but before that people used gas lamps or kerosene lamps with knobs which would dim the light before extinguishing it completely. So it is perfectly valid to say 'turn out'(in fact it is valid enough to be a title of an Enrique Iglesias song ;-)(Don't turn out the lights or something) )

Ah Enrique's song is "Don't turn off the lights" ;)
Though I do think "turn out" is a valid phrase
